I can’t begin to choose a favorite song, but I think Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson has a lot of significance to it. Plus I’ve been on a bit of a MJ kick recently. As strange as he was he had some amazing music.
The lyrics in this song are both sad and encouraging. The encouraging part far outweighs the sad and truly can motivate someone to make that change in the world. So many people are in need of help even in our own community. Sure it’s great to go to Africa and the third world countries but there are people in our own city and country who need just as much help.
This song follows the being uncommon theme Mr. Swalley has for us this year. As high school students it can be so easy to sit back and do just enough to get by, but will that help us once we’re in the real world? Relying on others can only get you so far. This song challenges people to look at their lives and see what they can change for the better. I find it very motivating.
Here’s the lyrics to the chorus:
I'm starting with the man in the mirror
I'm asking him to change his ways
And no message could have been any clearer
If you wanna make the world a better place
Take a look at yourself and then make a change

I like that it says you need to understand yourself before you can help others around you, whether far away or right next to you
ReplyDeleteits a great song and one that can really make somebody want to do something. But like the song says, if we want to change the world we have to change ourselves. Great choice Molly.
ReplyDeleteI've found it interesting that this is the most popular MJ song since his death...perhaps because it is the most introspective (except maybe for "Bad"). I like the song though...it sends the message that admitting we are broken and need to change is the first step to doing anything.
ReplyDeleteA bit too Calvinist for some perhaps?
